Kneebone, respecting the lawless career of Jack Sheppard, and struck with the probable fate that awaited him, the young man, as he contemplated this scene, fell into a gloomy reverie. I never intended it to be anything but a short story, for I had never completed even the shortest of stories unless forced to in grammar school.
